Sky Go App Not Working Mac

Sky Go was launched all the way back in 2006, and 14 years later, it’s still being used by tonnes of Sky TV customers.

Sky Go app not working issues are among the significant causes of headache for its users. Whatever device you are on - be it an Xbox console, tablet, mobile, or laptop, Sky has made it possible to watch TV anywhere you are with this on-demand service.

The desktop app can be downloaded and used on both Windows and Apple devices. Sky includes this feature in their packages at no extra cost. They say you can “stream live and catch up TV from your Sky package on your phone, tablet or laptop.”

But, for anyone who has paid out for Sky subscription as well as an Apple Mac, it’s probably quite disheartening when the two don’t work together.

All the excitement of being able to view your favourite Sky channels from the comfort of your laptop, whether you’re commuting or spending the day in our duvet, comes to a bit of an anticlimax when you find that Sky Go is not working on your Mac.

So, let’s take a look at why this problem occurs and what exactly you can do to fix it.

Why is Sky Go not working on my Mac?

Although many electronics can encounter glitches which are fixed with a simple ‘switch off and on again’, this Sky Go error is more likely to require something a little more complex.

But, before we begin troubleshooting, be sure to check that everything is plugged in correctly when it comes to the devices involved including the broadband router and Sky Q box.

Sky Go may not be working on your Mac for the following reasons:

  • Software or operating system needs updating
  • A new operating system is not compatible with the Sky Go app
  • A security block or firewall is in use, disabling the Sky Go app from being downloaded/working
  • The Mac settings are blocking the download of Sky Go
  • The Sky Go app has downloaded to an incorrect location on your Mac

Are Apple’s security features stopping the Sky Go download?

As with any tech, Apple Macbooks come with their pros and cons. And while the security on a Mac is top-notch, it can block some perfectly good apps from being downloaded due to Apple’s tight safety measures.

As much as we all appreciate being shielded from viruses and malware, sometimes these security features get in the way and block apps such as the Sky Go desktop app.

By going into your system settings, there are some simple changes that can be made to allow Sky Go to begin installing.

System Preferences > Security and Privacy tab > Click the lock icon > Enter password > General tab > Change setting for ‘Allow apps downloaded from’ to ‘App Store and identified developers’.

Where is the Sky Go download located?

Another issue that can occur when downloading the Sky Go app is that it ends up downloading to a location that doesn’t make any sense.

To find out where your Sky Go app has downloaded open the Finder.

Now, locate the app which could be in the Applications folder or the Downloads folder.

You’ve found the Sky Go app, so now, right-click on the app icon.

Select ‘Open’ from the menu and the app will open.

Sky Go app keeps crashing on Mac

Having issues installing the Sky Go app is a different kettle of fish to having a problem with playback on the app.

So, let’s take a look at what to do if the Sky Go app keeps crashing on your Mac.

Firstly, you can try creating an alternative Sky ID to log in and use the app.

  • Create a new Sky ID and link the account to your existing one.
  • Restart your device and log back into Sky Go.

Additionally, if you receive an error message when Sky Go fails to load, you may be faced with the options of ‘retry’ or ‘continue’.

Keep pressing ‘retry’ when the error message appears. After a few attempts, choose ‘continue’. You should now be logged out of the app. Once you restart Sky Go, things should work correctly.

If you’re paying for a Sky Go subscription and you’ve also forked out for a Google Chromecast then it could be pretty annoying if the two aren’t working together.

Sky Go is great for anyone on the move or for multiple people to be watching in the same home on different devices.

And the Chromecast certainly has its perks, too. Being able to cast whatever is on your phone to the telly makes life that little bit easier.

However, some people have been having issues with casting their Sky Go app to the TV with a Chromecast. So, here’s an easy-to-follow Sky Go Chromecast workaround…

Can you use Sky Go on Chromecast?

For a long time, it seemed that the Sky Go app and Google’s Chromecast weren’t compatible.

You can’t exactly load up Sky Go directly from your Chromecast but there are some ways to work around it.

Below we’ve outlined a series of simple steps to follow to get your Sky Go app viewable via a Chromecast.

Sky Go Chromecast workaround

Firstly, open the Sky Go app on your desktop computer – whether that’s an Apple Mac or a Microsoft PC.

Ensure that Google Chrome is installed on your computer and that the Sky Go launcher is up to date.

Now, to cast to a Chromecast pick something to watch on your Sky Go via the app.

Open a Google Chrome homepage and select the Google Cast option (this is in the top right-hand corner of the browser page) which should show a drop-down of the available devices in your home.

Then select the option under ‘sources’ to cast the ‘entire desktop’ which is the option to go for rather than just casting your current tab.

So remember to firstly choose what you want to watch on Sky Go, then using the Google Chrome browser select where you want to cast it to afterwards. Cast the entire screen and click share.

Now you should be able to see your Sky Go show on your selected device or TV.

How to get the most out of your Chromecast

There’s more than meets the eye with Google’s Chromecast and we wouldn’t want any of its features to go to waste.

So, to get the most out of your device you can stream all your media from the cloud.

Sky Go App Does Not Work On Mac

Instead of having Blu rays, DVDs and downloaded movies everywhere you can download an app to organise all your media to be able to watch everything from one place.

Another great feature of the Chromecast is guest mode.

If you’ve got people over, go to the Google Chromecast device settings and turn on ‘guest mode’ and people can use any app that has the Google Cast icon such as YouTube.

This gives everyone the ability to watch the same thing on the telly – and you don’t have to all crowd around a mobile phone to see!

Lastly, if you fancy it, you can browse the web on your TV.

Simply choose the option in the top right-hand corner of your browser and cast your current tab to the TV. This might make for easier reading for you or you could use it if you’re browsing the web with someone else.
